Famed Downriver boxer dies

March 10, 2009 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

MELVINDALE — Former Kronk Gym boxer Mickey Goodwin died of a stroke earlier this week.

Goodwin, 51, was found dead at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the house he shared with his mother.

At first it was believed that he had died from a beating, but an autopsy revealed he suffered a stroke and fell down the stairs.

Goodwin was trained by Kronk founder Emanuel Stewart and was a big draw for the gym. He won the Golden Gloves championship in 1975, but never won a professional championship.
