“On the Move: College is an Option!” is a free one-day outreach program dedicated to introducing individuals experiencing socioeconomic challenges to post-secondary education. Sponsors are the University of Michigan-Dearborn Office of the Provost, the University of Michigan-Dearborn Commission for Women, the Business and Professional Women of Dearborn, and the American Association of University Women, Dearborn branch.
“On the Move” will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Fairlane Center – North Building on the campus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Keynote speakers are The Honorable Judge Laura Mack of the 29th District Court and Ms. Laura Freeman, UM-Dearborn alum and photographer for the City of Dearborn.
The goal of this community outreach effort is to assist participants in realizing the importance of a college education in their efforts to become financially independent. Many “On the Move” participants are referred to this event by domestic violence shelters, social service agencies, and community support groups, however the program is open to all.
Accompanied by volunteer mentors, participants attend a college course, sit in on a panel
discussion of returning students who share their own college experiences, receive information on how to apply for college, register for classes, and apply for financial aid and scholarships. Representatives from local colleges, universities, and service organizations will staff informational tables.
