Professional eaters to attack world’s biggest burger

SOUTHGATE – The Travel Channel’s “Man v. Food” will be at Mallie’s Sports Grill & Bar, 19400 North Line, on Sept. 6 to tape an episode featuring host Adam Richman and 39 professional eaters as they take on the challenge of devouring the bar’s Absolutely Ridiculous Burger, which set the Guinness world record back in May.

“They’re bringing some people and we’re bringing some people,” bar manager Jasen Edwards said, “and they’ll try to finish it in two hours.”

The show crew will arrive Sept. 5 as the 185.6-pound hamburger is assembled in its mold and cooked in an oven on site for eight to 10 hours. Edwards said the advance work is necessary even with a scheduled taping time of 4:30 p.m. the next day because the giant burger takes another eight to 10 hours to cool enough to add toppings and be eaten.

“It’s named properly,” Edwards said. “It’s 3 feet in diameter and 1 foot thick.”
