TRENTON — A woman leaving Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1888, 2763 Veterans Parkway, at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday reported that her 1990 Cadillac Deville had been stolen in the previous couple of hours.
A 34-year-old Riverview man had come to the bar there earlier that evening and asked her to take him to Detroit to buy drugs, but she had refused and told police she did not see anyone take her car keys.
His bicycle was still in the parking lot, and he returned about an hour later and unlocked it from a pole as police kept watch. He told them he worked at a local restaurant and had just come from there to try to retrieve his backpack, but that the door was locked.
They released him at the scene, but about an hour later, police found the Cadillac on vacant property next to railroad tracks that cross King Road. Its lights were on and no one was inside.
What was inside, however, was the man’s backpack, which contained a prescription pill bottle, a paycheck made out to him and tags bearing his name from another restaurant.
Riverview police eventually located the man at Quarry and Nixon, arrested him and turned him over to Trenton officers.
