MELVINDALE – Joseph R. Falcioni, retired city police lieutenant, passed away at his home Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009. He was 78.

He began his career as a patrolman in 1955 and retired as a lieutenant in 1983.

During his retirement Mr. Falcioni was involved actively in the community and served on several commissions, including the Public Safety Commission, which oversees the Police and Fire departments. He was elected to the Melvindale-Northern Allen Park School District Board of Education, and served as a trustee on that board.

Mr. Falcioni was instrumental in city Memorial Day services honoring local veterans who gave their lives during the two World Wars, the Korean War and Vietnam War.

“He was a pillar in the community,” said Police Chief Rick Cadez. “(He) dedicated his life to public service and will surely be missed.”

Mr. Falcioni was the beloved husband of the late Mary, and loving father of Joseph, Kimberly and Katheryn (Dan) Burris. He is also survived by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Thursday.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church.
