Car buy turns into setup for robbery
A 29-year-old Westland man was robbed of a cell phone and a gold necklace Tuesday near Dolphin and Warren, where he had come to purchase a used BMW.
The victim said the purported seller of the vehicle, whom he met through an online advertisement, told him to meet him at the intersection to make the deal. But when he arrived, there was no BMW in sight.
Instead, the victim said, the would-be seller walked up to the man’s window and grabbed his cell phone off his lap. The victim then noticed two more men approaching his car from behind, and he began to reverse to try and escape.
As he was reversing, he noticed a handgun in one of the men’s waistbands and the same man who grabbed the cell phone also grabbed a white gold chain from his neck, the victim told police.
The victim also accidentally ran over one of the men as he was trying to escape, but said the man was able to make it to a nearby blue Ford Ranger.
Lug nuts taken off teacher’s car
A teacher at Dearborn Heights Montessori, 466 John Daly, received a scare Sept. 9 when she discovered lug nuts missing on a rear wheel and loosened on a front wheel of her Chevrolet Impala.
Witnesses told police that about 2 p.m., a medium-built white man in his late 30s, about 6 feet tall with dirty blonde hair and a limp was seen in the school parking lot tampering with the wheels. The suspect even asked one witness if they had a tire iron he could borrow.
Police are reviewing surveillance tapes from the school for potential leads.
