DEARBORN, Mich. – The arts are a wonderful way for adults and senior residents to experience meaningful and enlivening activities. That’s why the Dearborn Recreation Department’s Cultural Arts and Senior Services Divisions have created acting and visual arts classes for those ages 50 and up.
The six-week classes will be held at Dearborn’s Ford Community & Performing Arts Center (15801 Michigan Avenue, corner of Greenfield). The cost is $65 for Dearborn residents and $75 for non-residents, and includes the cost of class materials. For more information on any program, call 313.943.2354.
Senior acting classes, taught by Sofia Malynowskyj, take place on Saturdays in The Center’s senior lounge from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The first six-week session starts on Oct. 3. A second six-week session takes place from April 17 through May 22, 2010.
Visual arts classes will be held in The Center’s “wet rooms” and include instruction in fused glass making, ceramics and “art as brain food.”
Fused glass making is taught by Katrina Ruby and will introduce participants to creative glass making techniques. It meets from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Fridays from Oct. 2 to Nov. 6.
The classes on ceramics will be taught by Wendy Sample, and will enable participants to create works of art with clay using hand building and wheel processes. Classes take place on Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. from Jan. 8 through Feb. 12, 2010.
The class series entitled Art as Brain Food will be taught by Carissa Pintar. Participants will explore the enriching power of various art media and methods in a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere. Classes take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays from Feb. 20 through March 27, 2010.
Finally, those ages 50 and up can take part in the First Fridays Artist Exchange Series (FFAES). It’s a collaborative project sponsored by Dearborn Public Schools and the Dearborn Recreation Department’s Senior Services and Cultural Arts Divisions.
FFAES workshops are held each year to bring senior citizens and public school students together through the arts. All events are held in The Center’s “wet rooms” and free to adults ages 50 and up and public school students.
Space is limited for all workshops. To reserve a space, call 313.943.2190.
The first workshop will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, from 3-5 p.m. and is entitled Whimsical Art. Instructor Adnan Charara will help participants learn to combine “found” materials to create art. Additional workshops are: The Zen of Photography (3-5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19) and Creating Pottery on the Wheel (3-5 p.m. on Friday, May 7.
