WYANDOTTE – The newest hockey team in town is promising fans some first-season excitement.
The Motor City Metal Jackets’ slogan is, “Buy a seat – but you’ll only need the edge!”
Based at Yack Arena, the under-20 hockey team began its season earlier this month as part of the North American Hockey League, the oldest Junior A hockey league in the United States providing developmental opportunities for 16- to 20-year-old players aspiring to play NCAA hockey or professional ranks.
The team plays in the North Division of the NAHL, along with the Alpena Icediggers, the Marquette Rangers, the Traverse City Northstars and the expansion team Janesville Jets. Team officials say interleague play with teams from Alaska, Washington and Texas will create excitement for fans on a national level.
Games will be televised on the B2 Sports Network.
The Metal Jackets are owned and operated by Hanroku Japan LLP. Kenji Yamada, a Tokyo businessman with a hockey history, purchased the club knowing the successful history of Detroit-area hockey teams.
