DEARBORN, MI – The Michigan Military Moms (MMMs) are proud to announce their Third Annual MMM Walk for the Troops to be held at Dearborn’s Ford Field (on Brady between Cherry Hill and Michigan Ave.) on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. Check-in tables will open at 9:30 at the large pavilion just across the covered bridge. No need to collect pledges; walkers pay a flat fee to register, and that’s it!
Advance registration by September 23 is recommended to ensure that all registrants receive a 2009 MMM Walk t-shirt. Registration forms are available online at michiganmilitarymoms.org or by phoning Kathy Demko at 313-919-1589. Every walker—even the little ones—must submit a registration form.
Registration Fee:
· $25/Adult.
· $10/Youth (ages 13-17).
· $15/Senior (over 65)
· Children 12 and under walk for free (sorry, no t-shirt)
Proceeds from the Walk will be used to benefit MMM efforts in support of the troops. This support takes on many forms, including equipment donations, packaging marathons, and more.
Walkers do not need to be a member of the MMMs to participate. Come on out and show your support of the troops. The walk distance is not quite two miles and although everyone starts the walk together, participants can walk at their own pace. Each year participant numbers increase. The Michigan Military Moms are counting on this Third Annual MMM Walk being their best yet!
“It’s easy for people to get caught up in the start of school and other at-home activities, but it’s important to remember our troops—and not just during the holidays or when we read about casualty numbers,” explains Kathy Demko, an MMM and chairperson of the MMM Walk since it began in 2007. “It’s impossible to describe what it’s like to live every day knowing you have a son or daughter who is serving in the military and who could likely be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Efforts like this Walk help the troops to know they’re in the hearts and minds of many others—not just family.” Demko, whose son recently completed a four-year stint in the USMC, including separate deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, explains that the MMMs are a great support network for Moms of troops in every phase of their military careers and all branches of the service.
Michigan Military Moms was founded in July 2002 by a small group of military Moms led by Susan Klotz, of Allen Park, MI, whose son was in the Air Force at the time. Since its founding, hundreds of Moms in southeastern Michigan have experienced firsthand the kindness and support of fellow Moms whose children are serving in the military. The organization incorporated in the state of Michigan as a Non-Profit Organization under the leadership of the current MMM chairwoman, Maureen Van Hooser of Dearborn. The organization is one of a kind and has branched out from its original and largest meeting location in Dearborn to add meetings in other Detroit-area suburbs, including Troy, Dundee, Livingston County, and Macomb.
