DEARBORN, Mich. – Dearborn residents are invited to volunteer for a free training program to become members of the City’s official Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
The 20-hour training program take place on the following schedule: Friday, Oct. 2, from 6-10 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3-4, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
The training is free and the books and equipment used during the training will be yours to keep if you join CERT.
If you plan to attend the training, please call Emergency Management Coordinator Brad Smith in advance at 313.943.5470. The training will be held at Dearborn Police Headquarters, 16099 Michigan Avenue.
CERT volunteers are trained to be ready to help the community in the event of a significant public safety emergency, such as a tornado touchdown.
Only Dearborn residents are eligible to participate in the training program and to be Dearborn CERT volunteers.
Residents selected to be CERT volunteers would act under the direction of Dearborn’s emergency management officials during a major public safety incident.
CERT volunteers could provide many different types of valuable assistance, Smith explained: everything from assessing damage to helping the sick or injured. Participation is voluntary, and CERT members would not be asked to do any tasks that they would not be comfortable performing.
