LINCOLN PARK — A 30-year-old Dearborn Heights man was arrested early last Sunday for driving while intoxicated after rolling over his truck in the median of Fort Street near Champaign.
A woman told police she was traveling north in her car on Fort at Merrill about 1:30 a.m. when a green Dodge pickup truck sideswiped her and kept going. She said about 45 seconds later she heard a loud bang and saw a flash in the sky near Champaign.
Witnesses said the truck hit the curb of the center median and rolled over, striking a road sign and snapping an electrical pole in half, causing it to hang over the truck. One said he saw sparks flying from the truck’s tires just before the impact.
Police found the man unconscious and pinned underneath the dashboard and steering wheel and used the Jaws of Life to extricate him. They said he smelled of intoxicants and that they immediately sought a warrant to have a blood sample taken to determine his intoxication level.
The driver was taken to Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center. The woman complained of neck and back pain, as well as pain in her eyes from glass debris, and was taken to Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital.
