Denise Baig (right), an unemployed Taylor resident, walks the track at the Taylor Recreation Center with her niece Danielle Makely, a Southgate native who was visiting from Stephenville, Texas. Baig, who recently lost her job at a material handing company, already has a year’s membership at the recreation center. Behind them is the center’s enclosed weight room.

TAYLOR – Unemployed city residents can take advantage of a reduced rate for a membership at the Taylor Recreation Center.

Center staff is offering 10 six-month memberships for $50 each. To qualify, residents must show only their most recent unemployment check.

The membership includes the use of the weight room, cardiovascular room, gymnasium, walking track, sauna and locker room. The membership also provides multiple discounts on current programs at the center, such as the new golf cages and multiple youth programs.

“Michigan has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country,” said Recreation Center Manager Chris Schwartz. “We figure we can give back to the community by providing some discounted memberships.

“If you’re unemployed, chances are you’re not spending money on recreation or exercise. Now that it’s cold outside, it’s harder to go outside and run. You can visit the recreation center for a healthy lifestyle at a minimal price.”

The recreation center is at 22805 Goddard Road, just west of Pardee Road.
