DEARBORN, Mich. – It’s important to be able to challenge yourself both physically and mentally. It’s good to have a goal, something to strive toward.
The Mayor’s Fitness Challenge set for Saturday, May 22 presents the opportunity to do all of these things for people ages 14 and up.
Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr. endorses activities that promote healthy eating and active living, and so encouraged the Dearborn Recreation Department to develop a distinctive fitness event. It is in line with the Mayor’s Campaign for Healthy Cities, sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
Similar to the Navy Seal Challenge at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center two years ago, the Mayor’s Fitness Challenge will be a series of challenges pitting each competitor against a set time or amount of repetitions (reps).
The Fitness Challenge is a collaboration between the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center and the Detroit Medical Center.
It will time competitors with a 500-yard swim and a one-mile run, in addition to feats of strength and endurance with push ups, sit ups and pull ups.
Depending on performance times and number of reps completed, each entrant will be awarded points to tally up.
Every entrant will receive a T-shirt commemorating their participation. Earning “Elite” status will mean receiving a special T-shirt, signifying your milestone achievement.
Another motivation to participate in the Challenge is a special competition among Dearborn high schools, where the top three scores (one being a female) from each school will be averaged together to determine the strongest high school in the City.
The cost to register is $10.
Registration is underway now at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, and through www.dearbornfordcenter.com. Check out the website for more details.
