ALLEN PARK – After what organizers deemed a rousing success last year, Fireworks Fandango is ready to make an even bigger bang in the community Saturday night.
The fireworks display is scheduled for 10 p.m. at Champaign Park. Thousands turned out last year, and Terri David is excited about the possibilities this weekend.
“It always runs very smooth,” said David, the city’s administrative assistant to Mayor Gary Burtka and the City Council. “I think we’re going to have one of the best fireworks shows Downriver.” In addition to the pyrotechnics, the first Taste of Allen Park event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m., also at Champaign Park.
More than 20 food booths will be available from local eateries, plus beer and wine vendors, from 6 to 9 p.m. David said vendors interested in having a booth can sign up through Wednesday by calling her at (313) 928-1469.
Adding to the atmosphere, local classic rock cover band Ultra Violet will play many 1980s favorites from 6 to 10 p.m.
“We thought we’d add something special to the day,” David said of the food and band.
The entire event was funded by donations, not tax dollars, she said, and was put together with the aid of volunteers like the local Veterans of Foreign Wars. VFW members have organized children’s’ contests starting at 5 p.m., which could range from three-legged races to potato sack races and more.
