ALLEN PARK – The driver of a cement truck died Monday after crashing into an overhead sign truss along westbound I-94, causing the sign to fall onto the freeway and closing the westbound lanes for much of the day Monday.
Arlander Rogers Jr., 60, was driving the semitruck west along I-94 near Oakwood Boulevard about 7:30 a.m. when the driver’s-side front tire blew out and Rogers lost control. The truck overturned and slid into a support truss, which held up an overhead sign listing the upcoming exits. The truss then collapsed and the sign fell to the road, partially held up by the fallen truck.
The freeway was closed between Oakwood and the Southfield Freeway/Pelham Road exit for more than eight hours. Two lanes opened in time for the rush hour commute.
Rogers died later Monday at Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center in Dearborn as a result of injuries from the crash.
