ALLEN PARK – The high-speed regions surrounding Southfield Freeway and I-94 had a busy few days last week.
On Wednesday, a semitruck blew a tire and spilled oil across I-94 between Southfield and Oakwood Boulevard.
Less than 24 hours later, about 3 a.m. Thursday, three semitrucks and a smaller vehicle crashed in the same area. The second incident was the result of one of the trucks losing at least two steel coils, which fell onto the freeway and caused the other vehicles to crash.
Although all three trucks sustained extensive damage, only one person was taken to a hospital. The freeway was closed for several hours early Thursday during the cleanup, with traffic fully resuming by 9:30 a.m.
Later Thursday morning, four men reportedly robbed a man who had just walked out of a bank in Allen Park. Police chased the getaway vehicle north on the Southfield Freeway before it crashed into a freeway divider in Dearborn.
Two of the robbers were arrested, although police believe all four are ex-convicts who have committed other similar robberies in Allen Park, Dearborn Heights and Detroit since being released from jail.
