Keep it local, pickets say

Members of Operating Engineers Local 324 picket Wednesday at the site of the new Walmart being built at the northwest corner of Dix and Eureka roads. They say the Grand Rapids-based contractor is paying workers from outside metropolitan Detroit about half what union members typically make, and that the workers lack the rigorous safety training and skill level of union members. The daily pickets were expected to continue into this week.
