After rotting on the shoreline of Fordson Island for more than a decade, several boats were scheduled to be removed last weekend as part of a community cleanup project to make the island usable and the surrounding neighborhood, most of which is in Detroit, more appealing. The lone bridge to the island from a Detroit neighborhood is fenced off as a result of the illegal dumping that used to occur there between 10 and 20 years ago. The manmade island was cut out of the mainland in 1922 and has deteriorated slowly since.
