Local mortgage broker admits to providing kickbacks

December 18, 2010 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

DEARBORN – Resident Sarah Fawaz faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine after being arrested for a three-year kickback scheme.

U.S. attorneys have accused Fawaz, 39, of paying kickbacks to mortgage brokers in exchange for their business at Metro West Title Agency, which she owned. She pleaded guilty Dec. 7 to the charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

The Secret Service and the U.S. Small Business Administration, which conducted the investigation, said Fawaz received between $200,000 and $400,000 for the scheme since February 2007.

Her license to run a title insurance agency was revoked in September.
