Local police officers graduate from staff, command program

February 5, 2011 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

HEIGHTS —The Police Department has announced the recent graduations of Sgts. Todd Learst, Michael Petri and Richard Suchy from the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University.

The school’s 10-week program was hosted at the Dearborn Heights Justice Center from Aug. 9 to Dec. 3. Implemented by the Center for Public Safety in 1983, it has graduated more than 14,000 students both nationally and internationally.

The three Dearborn Heights officers were students in SPSC Class 302, which accommodated 24 students from agencies throughout southeast Michigan.

The Police Department anticipates several benefits from its officers’ participation in the program. Many graduates go on to achieve a variety of leadership positions within their respective agencies, school officials say.

Currently, more than 750 graduates hold the title of police chief; 39 of the 50 directors of state police agencies also are graduates of the program.
