Man pulled from rafters after foot chase

February 13, 2011 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

LINCOLN PARK — Police caught up with a 19-year-old Romulus man just after 5 p.m. Monday after he tried to elude them in connection with a domestic issue.

An officer first contacted the man in the 1300 block of Applewood near Cicotte in reference to an outstanding arrest warrant. The man then fled on foot.

Backup officers arrived and found fresh footprints in the snow in a backyard in that same block leading to the service door of a garage. The door was closed but not locked, and police entered and announced their presence.

They found the man hiding in the rafters of the garage and ordered him several times to come down, but he failed to comply until they warned him he would be electronically subdued. Even then, police said, he responded slowly, and officers had to pull him down and force him to the ground.

He said he ran because he didn’t want to go to jail.

The homeowner said he didn’t know the man and did not give him permission to be on his property. Police then arrested the man.

Nothing was missing from the garage.
