Graphic novelist Christian Slade will be a guest creator at Green Brain Comics during Free Comic Book Day May 7.

DEARBORN — Green Brain Comics, 13210 Michigan Ave., will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Free Comic Book Day May 7 with the biggest party the owners ever have thrown.

“When this event first started in 2002 it hit us like a lightning bolt,” said Dan Merritt, co-owner of Green Brain Comics. “Free Comic Book Day was the greatest idea we had ever heard, and we loved it.”

Since the first Free Comic Book Day, Green Brain Comics has given away tens of thousands of comics and hosted almost as many people in the store. This year, more than three dozen different titles will be available, many of them family friendly. Each visitor that day can choose three of them, just for coming in, while supplies last.

Free Comic Book Day runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Door prizes will be announced hourly. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Merritt said Free Comic Book Day this year will be bigger than ever, with more than just free comics. Several comic creators will be appearing throughout the day.

Guest creators include Christian Slade, the creator of the Korgi series of graphic novels. Korgi also is a part of the Top Shelf Kids Club Free Comic Book Day comic book available for free that day.

Many other local creators will be exhibiting their books, sketching and answering questions about their craft. Some will even have additional free materials to give away specially for that day.

Go to Green Brain’s FCBD Website for a full list of creators appearing. Additionally, there will be musical entertainment throughout the day provided by Alter Ego Management, as well as a live performance by experimental soundscape group Found Object Orchestra Internationale.

Merritt said the event is about giving back to the community that has supported Green Brain Comics for almost 26 years. A portion of each sale that day will be donated to WDET-FM, Wayne State University’s noncommercial radio station.

Gleaners Community Food Bank also will be on hand to accept donations of canned and nonperishable food. Old cell phones also will be accepted to benefit Cell Phones For Soldiers. People donating to each of these organizations can receive additional Free Comic Book Day comics.
