RiIVERVIEW — A former high school booster club official has been charged with embezzlement.

Alan Wade Benson, 49, of Riverview, was charged Tuesday with embezzling up to $20,000 from the Riverview Baseball Dugout Booster Club during 2010.

Benson, the former president of the club, was charged with a five-year felony of embezzling $1,000 to $20,000 from the club, as well as a two-year felony of fraudulent check writing.

An exact amount taken is not known, but Riverview Police Department Deputy Chief Clifford Rosebohm estimates about $10,000 was missing from the club’s accounts.

Benson was arraigned Wednesday at 27th District Court in Wyandotte.

This is the second time this year that charges have been brought in connection to embezzlement within the school’s Athletic Department.

In January, former RCHS football booster club treasurer Shellie Gendron, 39, was charged with embezzling more than $14,000 between April and November of 2010. A final conference on her case is scheduled for Friday.

Rosebohm said the two cases are not connected.
