Wedding crasher allegedly grabs, ditches box of cards

May 21, 2011 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

SOUTHGATE —A 37-year-old Taylor man was arrested May 13 after allegedly trying to make off with up to $20,000 in cash and checks from a wedding reception at Crystal Gardens, 16703 Fort St.

Witnesses said that at about 11 p.m., he walked into the reception, where they could see he clearly was not a guest, and grabbed a 2-foot-tall wishing well containing cards that held the cash and checks. He then ran out the front door and was pursued by one of the guests.

She said he then dropped the well in the parking lot and ran toward the back of the lot. Police said in the process that two other guests, a man and a woman, also joined the chase, which ended in the rear of the lot, where they detained him until officers arrived.

Police said that when they arrived the man admitted to taking the container of cards, which held between $10,000 and $20,000 in cash and checks. They then arrested him.
