The Dearborn Heights Chamber of Commerce has moved its Jinny Darwish Commemorative Golf Outing — traditionally held the Friday after Father’s Day — to the last Tuesday in September, which is Sept. 27 this year.
The outing, named after Darwish — the first chamber executive director and Dearborn Heights resident — is a long-standing tradition for the chamber. Members and non-members alike enjoy the day of leisure golfing in a scramble format for $139. They will play 18 holes at Western Golf and Country Club in Redford, receive breakfast, lunch, dinner with open bar, and drinks on the course. They also receive complimentary raffle tickets for the executive prize packages each with a value of over $500.
Last year the chamber started a scholarship awards program with some of the proceeds of the outing. The program — the Ed Wisniewski Business Scholarship Awards — is given to local high school students. The program was designed as a way to honor Wisniewski, a long-time State Farm Insurance agent in Dearborn Heights and member of the chamber board of directors. Wisniewski was instrumental in reviving the golf outing to its current level of success, and many of the golfers knew him personally. He was an outstanding business owner and supported the community in a number of ways.
This scholarship program was designed to encourage local students to attend college and perhaps enter the business field. The scholarship program will be continued this year and awardees will be chosen in June from the applications already submitted.
A number of tournament sponsorships are still available and range from $100 to $250. Golfers interested in playing in this exceptional event can sign up now by calling the Dearborn Heights Chamber of Commerce at (313) 274-7480. Golfers may deduct $10 per person from the price is their registration is paid by Aug. 16.
