Motor City Brass Band has been an active member of the Dearborn community since 2003 when they presented their first four-concert series at Ford Community & Performing Arts Center – a traditional that continues to this day. In 2010, MCBB was awarded “The Organization Award” by the Dearborn Community Arts Council’s Mayor’s Arts Awards, for their outstanding contributions to the advancement and support of the arts in the Dearborn community. Modeled after the traditional British brass band, MCBB represents an American take on a beloved British custom. With music director Craig Strain at the helm as conductor, arranger, and composer since the group’s inception in 1996, MCBB continues to musically define itself as an integral part of the growing national brass band movement. MCBB’s mission is on full display with the innovative and successful Motor City Youth Brass Band, the only performance ensemble of its kind in Southeast Michigan. Since 2006, participants in this unique program have been introduced to the culture of brass banding and have the distinction of representing the future of the adult ensemble. During the regular concert season, the band presents a four-concert series that is regularly attended by an audience of nearly 400. Catch Peace Lovin’ Brass, the final performance of MCBB’s 2011-12 series on Sunday, May 20 starting at 3 p.m. at FCPAC. Find out more at www.mcbb.org.

Sokol Detroit, a non-profit physical fitness and cultural organization has been in existence in the state of Michigan since 1875. It was started by a group of Czech immigrants who followed the teachings of Miroslav Trys and Jindrich Fuegner who expressed the philosophy of a “sound mind resides in a healthy body.” They have maintained gymnastic, callisthenic, and fitness classes in the Sokol system from childhood thru seniors emphasizing the need to keep the mind and body working together. Through this system they have also emphasized the family unit. It was not unusual to have three generations of families traveling together and performing in some manner at one of their local, national or even international exhibitions. Sokol Detroit built its Cultural Center in Dearborn Heights in 1967. They maintain a 22 acre beach property on Sandy Bottom Lake in South Lyon called Sokol Camp which is available for member use and rental. This has been home for their summer Sokol functions. This year they will hold their 35th Czech and Slovak Ethnic Festival at our Cultural Center on W. Warren on July 21 and 22. Their website, www.sokoldetroit.com, has contact information for all of their classes including our Czech language class.
