MELVINDALE – A police officer shot a stray pit bull in Lankford Park May 27, after the animal, which reports indicated was being aggressive toward park goers, approached him in an aggressive matter, police said.

About 3:15 p.m. that day, officers responded to calls of two aggressive stray pit bulls chasing people in the park.

According to the report, the dogs charged the officers and one fired a .40-caliber Glock once, appearing to hit one of the dogs when it was 10 feet from him.

Both dogs then ran from officers toward Wall Street. Officers searched the area, but could not locate the dogs. It is unknown whether the dog survived.

Residents were war-ned that the dogs are to be considered vicious. Anyone who sees them should contact Melvindale Police Department at 313-429-1070.
