Position created within police dept.

WYANDOTTE – The city’s Police Department will soon see a new position.

The city council Monday approved an offer letter sent to Sgt. James Pouliot offering him the position of inspector of the department.

The position was created after the retirement of Det. Lt. Bobie Heck in March.

The position was created to assign duties commonly handled by Heck to a non-union position, saving the department about $4,500 a year, City Administrator Todd Drysdale said in a letter to the council.

Pouliot, who has worked in the department’s Traffic Division for more than 20 years, will start his new role Monday.

Concern was raised in the meeting Monday about whether Pouliot’s background in the Traffic Division prepares him to be second-in command to the police chief.

Police Chief Daniel Grant said Pouliot already has handled many of the duties, such as staffing for the city’s annual street art fair, behind the scenes.
