WYANDOTTE – The Wyandotte Farmers Market will host the first ever Zucchini 500 from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the corner of First and Elm streets.
Children can create a race car with a zucchini (similar to the Cub Scouts Pinewood derby) and compete for prizes for the fastest and best decorated zucchini cars. Zucchinis will be weighed upon entry and race with comparable entries of similar weight.
The market will provide free axles and wheels Thursday with the purchase of a zucchini from the market. In addition, a creation station will be set up at the market for children who wish to create their race cars on-site.
“We are encouraging kids to ‘play with your food’ at the Zucchini 500,” said Downtown Development Authority Director Natalie Rankine. “We want to get more children involved in the importance of local agriculture and our hope families will come out to enjoy the event and meet our farmers.”
Participants must register and check-in prior to 5:30 p.m. on race day and forms are available at the market manager tent or from the market website, www.wyandottefarmersmarket.com.
The Wyandotte Farmers Market is open from noon to 7 p.m. Thursdays. For more information, go to the Wyandotte Farmers Market on Facebook or Twitter.
