Robbie Meehan, 7, of Dearborn, was winner of the most fish caught in the age 6 to 8 category at the Homecoming Fishing Derby Aug. 4 at Ford Field Park. The youngster proudly displays the smallest one he caught and returned to the Rouge River.
DEARBORN – Thirty six children, ages 12 and under, caught 49 fish during the Fishing Derby Aug. 4 at the city’s annual Homecoming festival. The event was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Dearborn with fishing supplies provided by Eppinger Manufacturing Co.
This was the eighth year that the Rotary Club has organized and sponsored the event in a reservoir adjacent to the Rouge River in Ford Field Park. Families of participating children also enjoy the event. Thirteen Rotarians and two of their spouses assisted in the event.
“The poles and bait are free,” Merritt Robertson, Dearborn Rotarian and event chair, said. “It’s a fun activity for families and for our Rotarians.”
Children also enjoyed strawberry jello worms provided by Rotarian Sue Waters.
The longest fish caught this year was a 14-inche largemouth bass. Another fish was 12 inches long. All of the fish were released back into the river. Prizes were awarded for the longest and most fish caught in three different age groups.
