DEARBORN — A 5-year-old boy died Oct. 5 from accidentally drowning in a swimming pool at the Dearborn Hyatt Regency, according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to a published report, police went to the hotel at 9:42 p.m. after receiving a 911 call, and a doctor on the scene could not resuscitate the child. The child died at a local hospital.

Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office Spokesperson Sarah Bazzi said the cause of death “was ruled as accidental drowning.” The examiner’s office completed the autopsy on Oct. 6.

Dearborn Hyatt Regency General Manager Peter McMahon said the hotel is saddened by the news.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends affected,” McMahon said in a statement. “The hotel is cooperating with the local authorities in their investigation of this matter.”

Dearborn Police Sgt. Edward Fries did not return phone calls by press time.
