WYANDOTTE – The Superior Boulevard area is home to several veteran memorials, including the recently dedicated Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Soon, its name will reflect that.
City councilors voted Monday to commemorate Superior between First and Van Alstyne as Veterans Boulevard.
The plan originated with Councilman James DeSana, who received support from the council as well as the American Legion Post 217, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1136 and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee. Representatives from those groups wrote letters in support of the name change, which they said was created to be inclusive of veterans of all wars.
The city plans to move its World War II and Korean War Memorials from Bishop Park to the area, already home to its World War I memorial, Purple Heart monument and Memorial Garden. Mayor Joseph Peterson said the move would make the name change even more fitting. He called the name change “another small display of our appreciation to those who have sacrificed much more.
“Needless to say,” he said in a letter to the council. “this area of Wyandotte has truly been transformed into a significant tribute to our nation’s veterans and the sacrifices they have made for our country.”
Decorative signs with the commemorative name are to be hung below the current street sign. As it is not a formal name change, it will not necessitate any changes in postal addresses.
