Death at firing range ruled suicide

TAYLOR — The self-inflicted gunshot death of a 51-year-old Dearborn Heights man at a shooting range was determined a suicide, Police Chief Mary Sclabassi said.

David Roark McDonald paid to rent a .45-caliber handgun shortly after 10 a.m. Jan. 5 at Top Gun Shooting Sports, 16725 Racho Road. Police said that witnesses described McDonald target shooting in a lane before shooting himself in the head.

No one else was injured, Sclabassi said.

“It is regrettable that Mr. McDonald decided to do this to himself,” Sclabassi said, “especially
in a public place where someone else could have been hurt or killed. We’re very fortunate no one else was injured.”

Sclabassi said that a suicide note was found inside McDonald’s car.
