Veterinarian assistant Alyssa Stafford prepares Molly for spaying at the PAWS Clinic in Taylor. The nonprofit operation is gearing up for a February “Beat the Heat” promotion, sponsored by a grant from PetSmart Charities, which offers spay treatments for $20. Springtime is known as “kitten season” at animal shelters given the large influx of unwanted litters that are difficult to adopt. PAWS Executive Director Kris Jordan said that the clinic was among a limited number of non-profit organizations to qualify for the PetSmart grant, the second year of eligibility for the Taylor clinic. PAWS has spayed and neutered more than 7,000 cats and dogs since opening in September 2011. Appointments for “Beat the Heat” are necessary, and cats must have a rabies vaccination before spaying.
