Edsel Ford head coach Bob Fay (left), and Edesl Ford seniors Cody Coward and Nick Luchunok hope to advance in the Division 1 state playoffs.
Edsel Ford baseball head coach Bob Fay likes the way his team has been playing lately. He also must be wondering, like a lot of others, if his Thunderbirds are a team of destiny.
Mix that question with talent and luck and you have an Edsel Ford Division 1 district title.
The T-Birds were owners of a 20-12 record heading into regional play last weekend, knocked off Lincoln Park 7-5 on June 1 to claim the win that sent them into regional play at Saline.
It is entirely possible that the local diamondmen from Rotunda Drive could capture the regional Crown that was played this past Saturday. Edsel was scheduled to face Belleville in one semifinal contest, with the winner taking on the winner of the Taylor Kennedy-Temperance Bedford semifinal.
Taylor Kennedy (22-8) advanced to the Saline regional with a 5-4, 8-inning win over Southgate Anderson in the Gibraltar Carlson district.
The regional champion advanced to the Division 1 quarterfinals where they are scheduled to take on the Grand Ledge regional champion at noon June 11 at Michigan State University.
The Division 1 semifinals will be 12:05 p.m. Friday at Bailey Park in Battle Creek, and the finals will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at C.O. Brown Stadium in Bailey Park.
Fay has a lineup consisting of an all-around good crop of players who can hit the ball and handle pitching duties. Cody Cowart has performed well at the plate and on the mound. Austin Atwood and Nick Luchonok are part of the pitching staff of the Western Wayne Athletic Association co-champs.
DIVINE CHILD CAPTURES DIVISION 2 DISTRICT TITLE
Divine Child continues to be the master when it comes to Division 2 district baseball. The Falcons won another title on June 1, beating Melvindale 7-1 in the
finals played at Melvindale.
The Falcons took their 19-16 record into the Edsel Ford regional Saturday where they were scheduled to take on South Lyon East in one semifinal, with the winner taking on the winner of the Center Line-Hamtramck semifinal.
The regional champion advances to the Division 2 quarterfinals where they are scheduled to take on the Bloomfield Hills Andover regional champion at 4 p.m. June 11 at Novi High School.
The Division 2 semifinals will be at 12:05 p.m. at Bailey Park in Battle Creek, and the finals will be at 12:30 p.m. at C. O. Brown Stadium in Bailey Park.
