The Downriver Council for the Arts will welcome spring at 11 a.m. April 5 at the Grecian Center in Southgate with its Recycled Runway Project, a luncheon and fashion show fundraiser featuring one-of-a-kind creations by artists using recycled materials.
A Mediterranean chicken salad and raspberry mousse will be served at noon at the Grecian Center, 16300 Dix-Toledo, with the fashion show and an awards ceremony for the best creations to follow. A cash bar will offer raspberry vodka martinis for $5.
Artists over 17 years old will vie for prizes of $100 in the Green Friendly category; $75, for the best Creative Design, and $50, for the People’s Choice. In addition, young artists under 17 will compete for a $25 Best of Show award.
Marie Therese Judkins will be the master of ceremonies, and the Downriver Youth Performing Arts Center will entertain with a segment from the play “Spark of Creation.”
Table centerpieces for the event are being created by Downriver students.
Committee chairmen for the benefit are Tammy Trudell, Erin Suess, Cheryl Alt, Cheryl Zemke, Krista Ewbank and Jazmyn Bencik.
Tickets are $40 (children 10 and younger, $30). They are available at the DCA headquarters in the James R. DeSana Center for Arts & Culture, 81, Chestnut, Wyandotte, or by calling 734-720-o671.
The fashions will be on display at the DeSana Center April 8 to 15.
Entries sought for exhibition
Applications are being accepted by Art Ambience for its 27th annual Juried Fine Art Exhibition and Non-Juried Fine Art Miniature Show to be held April 25 to 27 at the Woodhaven Community Center.
The show will open with an hors d’oeuvre reception and awards ceremony from 6 to 9 p.m. April 25.
Prizes will be awarded in the Fine Arts Division as follows; $300, first place; $200, second; $100, third; and $100, Artists’ Choice. All of the works will be available for sale.
In the Fine Arts Division, a limit of three works (no larger than 160 inches in circumference) will be accepted per artist. The limit for entries in the miniature show is five pieces (no larger than 24 inches in circumference).
The deadline for applications is April 9.
Artists 18 and older are eligible to participate if they are residents of Allen Park, Lincoln Park, Melvindale, Riverview, Southgate, Taylor, Trenton, Wyandotte, Belleville, Brownstown, Carleton, Ecorse, Flat Rock, Gibraltar, Grosse Ile, Huron Township, New Boston, River Rouge, Rockwood, Romulus, Sumpter, Van Buren or Woodhaven.
The entry fee is $20 for Art Ambience members; $30 for nonmembers.
