President, Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce
From the President’s Desk:
Quote of the month that has inspired me:
“Spring beckons! All things to the call respond; the trees are leaving and cashiers abscond.”
Spring is beckoning! I think winter is exhausted and done with it’s last hurrah. The sun is brilliant and the temperatures are slowly rebounding. If you can imagine Monday the Tigers will play their opening day game! In Michigan we are used to winter being here one day, and balmy, bird singing, blue skies the next day. A breath of fresh air literally energizes us for new beginnings and ventures. Get ready, some years spring surprises us, here is what’s new and fun to do in our communities!
Our Young Entrepreneurs Academy is revving up and our Investor Panel happens April 9. Free and open to the public, join us for a welcome reception at 5:30 p.m. and presentations by the Young Entrepreneurs at 6 p.m. Much like “Shark Tank” or “The Apprentice,” our YEA students will present to a panel of local investors in order to obtain funding for their new businesses and social movements.
I’ve been to class several times; you will be amazed at the passion, creativity and business savvy our students have on display. Personal investments are not expected. Check out the Chamber website, and register for this exciting and free event. The Arab American Museum is at 13624 Michigan Ave. and is a beautiful venue, come enjoy an evening of innovation and nail biting excitement as we see which ventures are funded!
Hiring Our Heroes is coming back to the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center April 23. The workshop for veterans and other military job seekers that focuses on resume writing, tips for successfully navigating hiring fairs, military skill translation, and interviewing will start at 8:30 a.m. A “Lunch & Learn” presentation for employers that focuses on best practices for recruiting, hiring and retaining veterans and military spouses will start at 1 p.m. The hiring fair runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., so if you know of a job seeker or employer, send them to the Chamber website to register for this fantastic event!
Speaking of our military families, let’s all give a round of applause to Genevieve Vang and the entire Bangkok 96 team for their recent donation of 7,734 Thai Feast frozen meals to the National Guard Family Assistance program. Genevieve and her family love our country and want to give back; I hope she’s not mad that I’m spreading the word of her good works! Congrats on your big heart and a job well done, Genevieve. My brother and his family are an Army family; we appreciate all that you do in support of our troops!
Finally, help us recognize our local community business leaders May 2 at our Chamber Choice Awards & Expo. This annual gathering will hold all sorts of surprises, honors and awards for those who pitch in and keep our economy humming with commerce and new ideas. The Expo provides the public and businesses with a chance to mingle, see what’s up and coming. Please join us for this lovely event at The Henry Hotel. As always details are available on our website or call us at 313-584-6100.
I’m always surprised when spring finally gets to Michigan, though here at the Chamber we have spring in our hearts! I’m buoyed by our great team, and the fountain of fabulous ideas that are in the works. Farmers Market preparations are under way along with our fabulous Taste of Dearborn plans. Spring will arrive and we will have loads to celebrate, besides the fine weather. Come and join in the fun!
