DFCU Financial’s Sara Kellenburger (left) and Kelly Peitrowski share enthusiasm for reading the classics.
The readings included excerpts from “The Call of the Wild”—the featured book for the Big Read, as well as details about the life of Jack London, the book’s author.
DFCU Financial invested as the Leader of the Pack sponsor for the Big Read which is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. Dearborn Public Library is one of 77 organizations nationwide that received this grant to host a Big Read program in its community. The Big Read Dearborn, themed “Call of the Wild: EmBARKing on Discovery,” focuses on London’s classic.
“The students were very attentive during our presentation at Salina Elementary,” said Sara Kellenburger, a senior member relations representative. “It was very rewarding to present this classic to children who may not otherwise ever hear of this book or incorporate reading as part of their daily lives.”
A presentation was also made at McDonald Elementary.
As part of the Big Read, a series of events is planned throughout April and May for children, teens and adults, including movies, book discussions, lectures, a photo contest and more. For a complete list of activities go to www.bigreaddearborn.org.
Each student was given a copy of the special addition tabloid that contains the book in its entirety. All four DFCU Financial branches in Dearborn also have copies of the tabloid available.
