Taylor man critical after cycle crash

HEIGHTS — Police are investigating a motorcycle crash that left a 50-year-old Taylor man in critical condition at Oakwood Hospital-Dearborn.

The crash occurred on the Southfield Freeway Service Drive near Annapolis at 9:40 p.m. April 12.

Police Cpl. Leonard Stewart said the initial investigation indicates that the motorcycle was the only vehicle involved in the incident and that alcohol was believed to have been a factor in the crash.

He said the man was not wearing a helmet and slid about 57 feet after losing control of the motorcycle.

Police have not released the name of the motorcyclist.

Stewart said the man’s injuries include severe head trauma, several skull and rib fractures and a collapsed lung.

“The man sustained very serious injuries in the crash,” Stewart said. “This is a cautionary tale to other riders, too, because if he had been wearing a helmet a lot of these head injuries either wouldn’t have occurred or could have been less severe.”

He said police do not suspect that the motorcycle was traveling at an excessive speed at the time of the crash.

“We believe he was only going between 25 to 35 mph,” Stewart said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about it is asked to contact Stewart at (313) 791-9808.
