Brown Bag Inspirations lunch time programs return with new topics
DEARBORN – It’s summer time and the reading is easy.
Adult readers and non-readers alike are invited to sign up for the 2014 adult summer reading program at Dearborn Public Library. The program begins June 16 and ends Aug. 7. The theme for the adult portion of the summer reading program is “Literary Elements” with a fun look at things scientific.
Participants with a valid Dearborn library card can sign up electronically through the library homepage at www.dearbornlibrary.org. Click on “Summer Reading” and follow the prompts.
Participants are expected to log one hour of reading per week for a total of seven hours by the end of the program. The online reading log allows readers to record title and author read, write a review if desired, and post entries to Facebook.
A reading log entry will put the reader in the pot for the weekly prize drawing of a Barnes and Noble gift card. There will be one weekly drawing per library. At the conclusion of the program, all participants who have logged at least seven hours of reading will be eligible for the grand prize drawing of a $100 Best Buy gift card.
As an additional incentive to participate, attendance at some community events can be logged in lieu of reading time. For example, attendance at any or all of the Brown Bag Inspirations programs will count toward the weekly reading goal as long as the attendance is recorded in the online reading log.
The Brown Bag Inspirations lunch time programs are weekly noontime presentations on a variety of topics. Adults are invited to bring a brown bag lunch and enjoy a presentation while they eat.
Brown Bag Inspirations is noon to 1 p.m. on select Wednesdays in Room 30 on the mezzanine at Henry Ford Centennial Library, 16301 Michigan Ave. Registration is not required.
Brown Bag Inspirations participants will have an opportunity to win prizes for attending; and, as an added bonus, attendance will count toward the weekly reading goal of the summer reading program.
The Brown Bag Inspirations programs are:
Science of More Nutrition for Less Money: Learn how to stretch food dollars for maximum nutrition, noon to 1 p.m., June 18.
Science of Home Brews: Learn the basics for creating beer, noon to 1 p.m., June 25.
Science of Cleaning Green: Learn how to keep homes clean and germ free with green and sustainable products, noon to 1 p.m., July 9.
Science of Alternative Energy: Learn about renewable energy and current green initiatives for the careful use of the environment, noon to 1 p.m., July 16.
Science of Growing a Rain Garden: Learn how to plan and develop a rain garden, noon to 1 p.m., July 23.

The summer reading program concludes with a community wrapup party from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 7 at HFCL. Entertainment and activities will be available for all ages. Grand prize winners in all age groups will also be announced.
A special event for adults will be a 7 p.m. reading and book signing with first-time Michigan author Josh Malerman. The Ferndale resident, who is the lead singer and songwriter for the rock band High Strung, recently published his first book with Harper Collins.
His debut novel, “Bird Box,” is described as an “edge-of-your-seat horror thriller with the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King.” Malerman will present a spine-tingling reading intended for mature audiences. One copy of “Bird Box” will be raffled off at this event, and it also will be available for purchase.
