City officials confirmed last month the long-anticipated appointment of Dan Reynolds (right) as fire chief, a position he’d held on an interim basis since May 2013. George Quiroz Jr. (left), a captain with more than 25 years in the department, was named deputy chief by Mayor Rick Sollars. The two veterans — and union contract mandates that the officers be promoted from within — went through a thorough review process before being named to their respective positions. Reynolds first joined the department in July 1995, and had previously worked on the Emergency Medical Services division of the Detroit Fire Department. Reynolds had been serving as deputy chief and was appointed as interim chief last year following the dismissal of Robert Tompos. Quiroz began as an auxiliary firefighter in 1998, has been a fire captain since 2011 and is past president of the Taylor Professional Firefighters’ Union Local 1252.
