DEARBORN — Multiple charges have been filed against the 73-year-old Dearborn resident who fired a pistol in a dental office last month.
Jihad Catrib was arraigned before 19th District Court Judge Mark Somers Aug. 29 on the charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a concealed weapon with unlawful intent, felonious assault, discharging of a firearm in a building and felony firearm after allegedly bringing a pistol into the Advanced Dental Clinic, 14639 Ford Road, Aug. 28.
Catrib was given a bond of $1 million cash or surety and remains in police custody.
A preliminary examination of the evidence against him was scheduled for Friday before Somers but it was not completed by press time.
Police were called to the dental office at 9:10 a.m. for a report of shots fired and arrived to find the suspect disarmed and inside the building.
Employees told police that the man entered the billing area of the dental office and argued over previously disputed dental charges.
The man then drew a pistol and threatened the resident dentist, but a dental employee grabbed the man and wrestled with him until additional employees helped subdue him. During the altercation the pistol was fired once but no one sustained injuries.
Police took the man into custody without incident.
Police Chief Ronald Haddad said he was grateful that no one was hurt during the incident and cited the quick actions of the dental office employees for helping resolve the situation peacefully.
“If it were not for the quick actions of the citizens involved, this incident could have been a tragedy,” Haddad said.
