DEARBORN — Choirs from Divine Child schools will perform with county music star Kenny Rodgers during his “Christmas & Hits Through The Years” concert Dec. 6 at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.
Divine Child Choral Director Joseph Marino said the schools’ choirs were on the short list of schools contacted by officials at the Fox Theatre to take part in the local stop of Rodgers’ 33rd Christmas tour.
“It started two years ago because the Kenny Rodgers crew came back for their tour,” Marino said. “The Fox Theatre had been calling several schools locally and we were one of the schools that they called.
“They came back this year and were looking for choirs again and the Fox Theatre had asked us to come back and sing again. We were honored to be selected as the only group to sing with them two years ago and we really had a good time.”
The choir performed with Rogers in 2012 during a similar concert and accepted the chance to sing with him again this year.
This year’s group from DC will feature 36 high school students and five elementary students.
The students will sing in the second half of the show, which involves the Christmas portion. They will sing three songs: “A Holy Night,” “Joy to the World” and “Go Tell it on the Mountain.”
The choir will also perform an a capella piece to the song “When a Child was Born” toward the end of the show.
“The students are very excited, in fact the whole school is excited. It’s a fantastic experience for everybody in the community,” Marino said.
The students have been working hard, adding extra weekend and after school practices to prepare, Marino said.
