DEARBORN – Firefighters were called to AK Steel Dearborn Works — formerly Severstal — on Miller Road for a fire that had broken out at the plant about 3 p.m. Feb. 9.
A thick, black smoke filled the air around the plant because of the fire.
“The conveyor belt that feeds the furnace was the source of the fire,” Fire Chief Joseph Murray. “The house unit rubber fell off and burned.”
Firefighters were at the plant for three hours dealing with the fire due to the difficulties of the structure of the building.
“The features of the building made it difficult to take the fire out but the extinguishing went smooth,” Murray said.
No injuries were reported.
