DEARBORN — A collision between a vehicle and a tanker caused an explosion on eastbound I-94 near Wyoming Avenue and Michigan Avenue this morning.
Police and firefighters received the call about the fire just after 11 a.m. and closed the expressway in both directions upon arrival. Surface street traffic also was redirected. Some drivers stood near the streets, waiting for traffic to clear.
Dearborn firefighters worked to get the fire under control. A foam truck was sent by the Marathon Oil Refinery in Detroit to help battle the blaze, a Fire Department spokesperson said.
The fire was under control and extinguished about 1 p.m.
Only minor injuries and no deaths were reported by the Fire Department.
The tanker flames could been seen miles away with orange flames and black smoke filling the sky. Smoke also was seen coming from sewer system manholes, a Police Department spokesperson said.
