Statement from Wayne County Commission Chairman Gary Woronchak

“Last week, the Wayne County Commission approved a transfer of funds in order to avoid a one-time property tax levy on residents to pay a $49 million court judgment. Wayne County Executive Warren Evans vetoed the commission’s action, which had been approved by a 9-5 vote.

“After the veto, which would require 10 votes to override, I called on commissioners to reflect on our options and seek feedback from constituents. It’s clear that an attempt to override the veto would be unsuccessful and probably counterproductive. So, an override vote will not occur.

“The commission’s action had a hand in the administration finding ways to reduce by approximately 20 percent the amount of the judgment that will be directly passed on to taxpayers.

“The Wayne County Commission remains committed to resolving the county’s many difficult financial challenges ahead.”
