Two local hair salons are teaming up to collect items for refugees overseas.
Color Salon, 23438 Ford Road in Dearborn Heights and Salon Pure, 6311 Schaefer Road in Dearborn have been gathering clothes, shoes and blankets to send for those fleeing Syria seeking refuge.
Color Salon owner Roudayna Taha started taking donations at the beginning of September and has complied bags full of items.
“We’ve all been watching the footage of refugees on the news and are heartbroken by the conditions they are living in,” she said. “This is the best way we can help them.”
Taha’s salon also devoted its sales from Sept. 29 and 30 to cover the shipping costs.
“We’ll be shipping a container to Lebanon by mid- or end of October,” she said. “Once we’re done collecting items we’re going to sort through them and box them for shipping.”
Salon Pure owner Rana Sayed got the call from Taha to help collect and couldn’t refuse.
“I thought it was a great idea and would be a nice way to give back,” she said. “Our employees also donated their tips for a week to help buy reggaes undergarments.”
Sayed said the response of the community has been amazing to see.
“We’re amazed by the amount of items and bags we’ve received in just one month,” she said.
Anyone interested in donating clothes, shoes or blankets to refugees overseas can drop off items to either salon or call 313-551-3565 for more information.
