Would-be thief shot at gas station

DEARBORN — A man attempting to steal another man’s cellphone and wallet at Speedway, 20180 Outer Drive, Oct. 5 was shot near a gas pump.

Police were called to the scene on a report of the shooting after an altercation between the suspects and victim about 2:20 p.m.

A man drove into the station to fill up on gas when a black vehicle containing two men drove up, and one of the men attempted to take the first man’s wallet and cellphone.

The conversation escalated into an argument when one of the attackers punched the victim in the face, police said.

Witnesses told police the victim revealed a handgun and shot one of the attackers, who took off on foot before collapsing down the road.

The second attacker tried to help the other attacker who was shot, but drove off in a black vehicle as police approached the gas station.

The man who was taken to a local hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

The shooter was taken into custody for questioning.

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information on the incident to call 313-943-3012.
