DEARBORN — A 57-year-old Dearborn Heights woman was struck and killed by a vehicle about 6:15 a.m. today while she was crossing Michigan Avenue to catch a bus.
Preliminary investigation revealed alcohol may have been a factor, police said.
Police said the woman was crossing Michigan Avenue at Outer Drive on foot against the red light in an attempt to get on an eastbound bus which was stopped at the bus stop. She was struck by an eastbound vehicle driven by a 47-year-old Woodhaven resident crossing through the green light.
The woman was transported to Beaumont Hospital — Dearborn where she was pronounced dead. Police were withholding the woman’s name until family members could be notified.
Eastbound Michigan Avenue was closed from Telegraph Road to Military during the police investigation.
“This is a tragic situation and our condolences go out the families involved,” Police Chief Ronald Haddad said. “With that being said, I cannot stress the importance of obeying traffic safety laws, statistics have shown compliance to traffic safety laws will mitigate these types of situations.”
