Dearborn police officer shoots and kills man after struggle

December 29, 2015 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

DEARBORN — A Dearborn police officer shot and killed a Detroit man in Detroit Dec. 23 after a foot chase and struggle.

According to a Police Department release, the police officer — the department did not release his name — was patrolling the Tireman Avenue and Greenfield Road area when he spotted Kevin Matthews, 36, of Detroit, known to be wanted on a probation violation warrant.

Matthews had escaped from officers earlier in the day after committing a larceny in Dearborn.

When the officer approached Matthews, he fled on foot into a neighborhood where a struggle between the two ensued.

The police officer fired his department issued weapon, striking Matthews.

Matthews was pronounced dead at the scene and the officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained during the incident.

The Detroit Police Department responded to the incident location and will be conducting the investigation.

“This is extremely tragic and while we are grateful that the officer involved did not sustain serious injuries, our condolences go out to the family of the decedent,” Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said.
